About the TURBO FARMER Range
MULTIFARMER
Merlo lead the World in Telescopic Handler Design. With more than 70 models, this family owned company is the third largest manufacturer in Europe. With many patents and innovations to its name, Merlo proudly claims to be the World Leader in Handler Design.

Like most telehandler manufacturers, Merlo has an
optional Boom Suspension System (BSS). Their basic
design concept of long wheelbase and short overhangs
to front and rear already minimises pitching, but BSS is an
advantage in containing bounce over hard ground, thus
retaining payload.

Many Merlo Turbofarmer models feature a unique built-in sideshifting and frame levelling mechanism. A clever redesign and the introduction of a microprocessor controlled gas accumulator package produced Merlo’s second suspension option –Electronic Active Suspension or EAS – reducing shocks introduced by driving over rough ground and benefiting payload retention, structure fatigue life and the driver. Whole Body Vibration is a major factor in debilitating long term bone problems and, by announcing a unique cab suspension system, Merlo becomes the ONLY telehandler manufacturer in the world to offer THREE distinct types of suspension and has already won several prestigious international design awards. The new P55.9 CS represents a move of emphasis for Merlo into the sphere of heavy duty specialised handling. It is a 5.5 tonne capacity machine capable of lifting its full rated load to 8.6m and itself weighing some 10.3 tonnes. This new model has a completely new chassis and boom configuration, new heavy duty axles with epicyclical hub reduction and a big 140HP engine. The Merlo cab is well known for its size (995mm wide) and spaciousness. Rather than being fixed to the chassis (part of the ‘Ring of Steel’ in this case), the CS cab module pivots upon two rear-mounted articulated arms. Under the cab is a hydraulic cylinder and gas/oil accumulator. At rest, the CS system is deactivated and the cab module rest upon its stops, under its own weight. A dashboard switch activates the CS system on demand and the hydraulic cylinder raises the cab 60mm and initiates suspension. Once in operation, the hydropneumatic cylinder allows a total suspended movement of 110mm to the cab module, No other telehandler manufacturer currently offers anything like this level of protection for the driver. Cab suspension will be standard on the P55.9 CS when it is available in early 2008 and the CS is expected to be made available on a selected number of Turbofarmer, such as the P34.7, later during the year. It is evident that suspension reduces loss of payload and promotes better vehicle control at today’s higher travel speeds. The issue of Whole Body Vibration requires manufacturers of all mobile equipment to seriously consider the implications of the driver’s health over his working life. Merlo has taken the issues of suspension very seriously and, uniquely, offers a tiered level of solution for varying applications.
